6 tips for creating your future life plan

Life is an adventure.

All of us will experience many ups and downs and become different versions of ourselves over the years.

Many of us will leave life up to chance, being a bit of an ostrich and putting our head in the sand, hoping for the best.

5 years ago I would have included myself into that bracket!

Often through a difficult moment, we are woken up to our world and wonder how we even got here in the first place. Or just simply want to make changes.

How do we even start?

Having a roadmap of where we want to go in all parts of our life can really help with getting clarity, it’s not the roadmap itself, it’s the process you go through that can create breakthroughs we never thought we could have.

I have worked with hundreds of clients creating their future roadmap, and have recently updated my own, these are my brief reflections on what it takes.;

1. REFLECT ON ALL PARTS OF YOUR LIFE
  • What kind of health do you want to have?
  • What kind of relationships do you want to have?
  • What truly makes you happy?
  • What do we want your finances to look like?
  • How do you want to be remembered?
  • If you had your own Groundhog Day – what would it look like?

2. ASK OURSELVES OR GET OTHERS TO ASK US CHALLENGING QUESTIONS
  • Why are you where we are now? -
  • What is important to you?
  • Are you happy? If not, why not?
  • Are you taking ownership for your own lives or blaming others?
  • What stories are you telling yourself?
  • Have you been living this version of this life for yourself or for others?

3. WRITE A PLAN
Writing your future roadmap is like “eating an elephant” you need to do it piece by piece. As that plan slowly comes together, a sense of clarity forms. Start with the “what” not the “how” the how will just get in the way and lead you back to where you already are.

4. WHAT'S GOING TO GET IN THE WAY?
Beliefs! So many of us are held back by what we believe about ourselves, what we have been told by others.
Are those just old beliefs from your childhood that no longer stand up to scrutiny? If these aren’t challenged and dealt with, they will be a huge roadblock.

5. TAKE ACTION:
In our fast-paced lives, it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind, telling ourselves we will start tomorrow. Tomorrow for most of us will never come, do something simple today, i.e., how do you want your health to be, and start from there…action creates momentum

6.BE PREPARED TO GET COMFORTABLE WITH BEING UNCOMFORTABLE
Any change is going to inevitably feel uncomfortable; comfort will just keep us where you are. Having a plan will help us understand why we need to get uncomfortable and make it a little easier and keep us on track. Having a life plan gives you a sense of purpose, helping you to navigate the twists and turns of life with intention.

All our journeys begin with that first small step.
